Clifford Chance is holding elections for its new Asia managing partner following Jim Baird's resignation.
Mr Baird stepped down from his position earlier this year and has since suffered from a critical condition in Hong Kong.
Having been with Clifford Chance for 22 years Mr Baird was appointed regional managing partner in 2001, after moving to Hong Kong in 1990.
The ballot, due in September, will be conducted among the firm's Asian partnership.
In a statement made to the press David Childs, global managing partner at Clifford Chance, said: "Jim has been at the heart of Clifford Chance's Asian practice for over 18 years."
"Jim and his family are constantly in our thoughts and the firm will continue to do all it can to support them in the months ahead."
Asia is becoming more of a focus to nearly all international law and banking companies, including Clifford Chance.
The company is believed to have expansion plans for the area after the previous year saw 22 per cent growth.
