Research by Forrester has found that a truly effective chief information security officer (CISO) must posses a moral compass to command respect from their employees.
Khalid Kark, an analyst at Forrester and the report's chief author, told the InfoWorld: "CISOs are expected to have a certain level of technical skill, but the character of the person really drives a lot of the success that they might have in this position."
He added that letting people get to know you as an individual is a key when being trusted with sensitive information.
Other attributes seen as an advantage for successful CISO's are the flexibility to look for creative solution, remaining patient in tough situations and being able to defend budget items, said the computing site.
"CISOs need to help other people succeed and take over different responsibilities. This should be part of their overall security strategy," Mr Kark told the website.
In addition the research found that a high level of technical skills was not deemed essential for the post, with bosses simply needing to be able to understand the data.
